1. What is the purpose of a gutter strainer?

Gutter strainers, also known as downspout strainers, perform the important function of keeping most leaves and debris from being washed into the gutter downspouts (aka leaders) where they create blockages either over the outlet opening to the downspout or in the elbows (bends) of the downspout. Strainers keep the gutters draining better and longer between routine cleanings.

2. The Spring Gutter Strainer® has a unique design as the wire runs horizontally instead of vertically like other strainers I have seen. Does it work?

Absolutely! The Spring Gutter Strainer® design is innovative and effective. In addition to many years of extensive testing in both a controlled environment & in market, it has been successfully sold in the United States and abroad for many years. The longer neck and the sheer weight of the Spring Gutter Strainer® make it impossible to be unintentionally dislodged from the downspout outlet. The large round head of the strainer is larger than that of any other strainer, effectively enlarging the gutter outlet drainage area.

3. What inspired you to design the Spring Gutter Strainer®?

As they say, necessity is the mother of all invention. In this case the Spring Gutter Strainer® was created by members of Gutter Guys, LLC in Connecticut. Each year Gutter Guys, LLC sells thousands of gutter strainers in order to enhance the value of their gutter maintenance and cleaning service. When designing the Spring Gutter Strainer®, we wanted to improve functionality so a larger head that properly fits in the gutter and a longer neck made sense. Secondly, we couldn't think of a simpler design than a coil spring in the shape of an exaggerated pear fruit. After building a few prototypes and some extensive testing the Spring Gutter Strainer® was born.

4. Is there any benefit to the unusual strainer design?

The biggest benefit is that there is only one part to the Spring Gutter Strainer®. This allows no room for failure. Other "high quality" gutter strainers are often spot welded, which in the case of galvanized strainers makes them vulnerable to rusting because the thin galvanized surface is damaged by the welding process. The quality of wire used in the Spring Gutter Strainer® is unparalleled in gutter strainer manufacturing.

5. How long should I expect the Spring Gutter Strainer® to last in my gutters?

The galvanized Spring Gutter Strainer® (suitable for all aluminum gutters) should last well beyond ten years. The stainless steel Spring Gutter Strainer® is the choice for all gutters including copper. They will last forever, unless you mechanically and intentionally destroy them.

6. I live in a brand new subdivision, all the trees in the neighborhood are new, short and do not extend over the gutter line. Do I also need strainers in my downspouts?

Yes, it makes sense to put them in. The perfect time to do it is during your next gutter cleaning and inspection. (All gutter systems should be checked out and cleaned at least once each year.) Even if your tree heights are below the gutter line today, they will continue to grow. In the meantime the Spring Gutter Strainer® will keep airborne debris, your kids' toys, tennis balls, and wildlife out of the downspouts!

7. You make GALVANIZED and STAINLESS STEEL Spring Gutter Strainers®, why?

Galvanized strainers offer a lower cost alternative suitable for all types of aluminum and galvanized gutters. Stainless steel strainers are the ultimate choice for all gutters including copper. Since stainless steel does not react with any metal (aka galvanic corrosion) it will last indefinitely and is the best choice for copper gutters.Furthermore, the stainless steel Spring Gutter Strainer® retails for much less than many copper strainers, making them a great alternative to expensive, yet flimsy copper strainers in copper gutters.

8. What is this galvanic corrosion that I see you mention on several occasions?

Galvanic corrosion is an electrochemical reaction between two or more dissimilar metals; it is sometimes referred to as electrolysis. In gutters this becomes a factor when two different metals like aluminum or zinc and copper (anode and cathode) are immersed in an "electrolyte", which is nothing more than the presence of moisture.

What is anode and what is cathode?
Each metal develops its own particular electrode potential when immersed in an electrolyte (moisture). If two different metals are coupled together in the same electrolyte, the metal with the more negative potential will suffer corrosion. The greater the difference between the metals, the greater will be the driving force behind the tendency to corrosion. For example, zinc and aluminum are what we call electronegative elements (=anode) and copper is electropositive (=cathode). In layman's terms, that means that when you have two different metals touching, one will dissolve the other. So bottom line for our purpose is; use galvanized strainers for gutters made of aluminum or galvanized steel. Use stainless steel strainers in all types of gutters including copper gutters.

9. I can buy cheaper gutter strainers in my local hardware store. Can you explain Spring Gutter Strainer® pricing?

Other gutter strainers in your local hardware store may be cheaper in the short term, but they have poor functional design and a short lifespan. The material used is usually flimsy aluminum wire, aluminum mesh, or thin galvanized wire, all prone to rusting or falling apart. Those strainers will have to be replaced within two to three years causing not only frustration & added replacement costs, but also clogged and overflowing gutters. The Spring Gutter Strainer® may cost a bit more but delivers much better value as it will function better and last longer. Finally, the Spring Gutter Strainer® is now offered nationally to independent hardware stores and gutter product distributors. So if you don't see it, ask for it!!

10. With the Spring Gutter Strainer® in my gutters, how often do I need to clean them?

Gutter cleaning is one of the most important home maintenance services needed and it is often overlooked until gutters are overflowing and possibly causing water damage. Preventative maintenance is the most efficient way to prolong the life of your gutters, roof, windows and siding. Generally, you should have your gutters cleaned two to four times per year depending on where you live and the surroundings of your home (i.e. trees with blossoms, pollen strings, leaves, pine needles, seeds, acorns, sticks and other debris).

11. If I have gutter protection (screens, covers, mesh, sponge, etc), can I still use Spring Gutter Strainer®?

Yes but we do not recommend installing any gutter strainers in your system if you already have some type of gutter protection that is working well for you. However, we do find that many homeowners can actually save money by having the gutter system open (no screens), installing the Spring Gutter Strainer® and then performing routine cleanings.

12. Wouldn't I be better off just installing one of those gutter covers or screens to keep everything out of my gutters and forget about cleanings?

After 20+ years of cleaning, repairing & installing gutters in the Northeast, we have seen thousands of homes and commercial buildings with some type of gutter cover product. We firmly believe that most homes are not best served with gutter protection systems. We say, save your money now and your frustrations later.

Gutter screens are very profitable for retailers, contractors and even home improvement catalogs. Many of these products are expensive and are sold with a promise that you won't have to "ever clean your gutters again." The fact is that there is no cover, screen, helmet, or mesh that can deliver on a completely maintenance-free promise. Every gutter needs routine maintenance!

Spring Gutter Strainer® delivers on its promise to keep water flowing between routine cleanings for a fraction of the cost.
